If you want to add partner you have a choice to add someone that already exist inn the family tree. Then lets say my distant cousin married someone, and that person turns out to be another distant cousin of mine from another great grandpa. Unfortunately, I don't think there is a way to remove a branch on a family tree (if you don't want to delete each member of the unwanted family individually). If you are just annoyed by seeing them, maybe it could be an option to visit the "Options" setting of your family tree and select the number of generations displayed on said tree? You can select how man generations of parents, children and other ("other" being aunts/uncles, their children, their partners, their partner's relatives and so on) you want to display - if you select "none", you'll only see a person's direct ancestors, siblings and direct descendants.

Depending on how big your family tree is, how many branches it has and what you want to use it for, this option might not work well for you, as you might want aunts/uncles and so on to be displayed.

To delete a family member, you first have to select them.Below the info fenster on the left of your screen are multiple options (i. e. "Add brother/sister", "Add partner/ex"); select "More Actions". This opens a menu with buttons such as (depending on the person marital status, parents etc.) "Set parents", "Change partners" or "Add new friends".

The last button says "Cancel", and above it usually is a button labeled "Delete [first name]". If you click it, you'll have to confirm you want to delete them, and you're done.

There are, however, some people you cannot delete because that would split the tree. If you had a tree with a couple, their son and their grandchildren, you wouldn't be able to delete the grandchildren's father as this would remove the connection between the kids and their grandparents. To delete the father, you'd thus have to delete his children first.

This is strange and never occured to me - when I set a couple as "ex-partners", they usually stay this way. Maybe try a workaround and delete one parent and add them again as ex-partners?

your best bet may be the godparent option, or possibly put this person on the tree as a friend of the parents and then in the child's 'set parents' select them as one of the second parents, then in parent type choose 'other' and then create a term, like 'Honourary Aunt/Uncle' for example.

I think you can't add footnotes to certain fields. Like, if you are creating your own family tree and an aunt says "Our deceased great-grandfather was born at April 11th, 1918" and your dad says "No, he was born at August 11, 1919" you can't put a footnote on the field "Birth date".

What you can do, however, is to go to "Biography". There you can stuff like "Birth Place", "Profession", "Interests" and so on. Below all the given options is a button "+ Add custom family field" which creates a new field in the "Biography" section that you could title "Footnotes" and add everything you'd like to annotate.

You have two options to do this:

1.) You click on a living member of the family tree and then select "Share" on the bottom of the screen. You can then choose the permissions you want to grant to your family members (either to only view the family tree or to add edits as well). After that, you either use familyecho.com's E-Mail template to send an invite link, or select "Create Link". This of course creates a link you can send to anyone you like and that gives everyone with that link the permission to either view the family tree or edit it (though only users who are signed in to familyecho can use all of the "Edit" features).

If you create the link while selecting the person "Mattheusz" on your family tree, every person who clicks on the link will see a view of the tree that is focused on Mattheusz (and, if you selected the permission "Edit") be able to edit Mattheusz without logging in. As you said you want to share your tree with family members, I just assume it's your family tree, it could be thus a good idea to send each family member an own link centered on them, so that they can edit any information about themselves if they like.

2) If you are finally "done" with your family tree (aka: don't expect to make any changes soon) you can click on "Save" instead of "Share" and select a data format. This option allows your family members to have a "copy" of the family tree for themselves (as they can't save the tree if you have just send them a "Share" link), and if they use other geneaology programs, they can upload it there. However, if you change your family tree after saving it on your computer, your family members will only see the old version.

You can of course combine both versions and send your family members a saved HTML of your family tree as a "backup" and share links as well, or upload the HTML on a filehosting server (or just Google Drive) and update it if you change the tree.

This depends on the exact kind of family relationship. If you just want to have the kid disappear from the tree, you can click on the kid, choose "More Actions" and then select "Delete [name of child]". (If the child has children themselves and/or a partner that is/are not connected to other people on the tree, you'll have to delete them first.)

If you want to keep the child but change their parents, you have to click on the child, select "More Actions" again and then "Set Parents". The kid's current parents will be displayed as "Primary Parents", and if you click on their names, you'll be able to select which people on the tree should be the kid's parents instead. If the child has (ex-)partners or children, they'll be transfered as well; siblings won't, however, so if you want to change multiple children's parents, you'll need to do this for every child.

I think the only option for a person to be marked as widow/widower is to create a couple and mark one of the partners as "Deceased". If you click on the button "Partners" (between "Personal", "Contact" and "Biography"), you'll see a list of all partners a person has had. After clicking on "Edit details", the website offers you different kind of specifications for the relationship ("Married", "Annulled", "Reconciled" etc.) and also "Other" which allows you to create an own label (that could be "Widowed").

Maybe there is another option, but if, I'm not aware of it.

Yes, and it's quite easy. You just have to open your account (either by logging in new or clicking on "My Account" on the upper right side of your screen, right between "Save" and "Logout"). On your account, all of the family trees you have created are listed, and next to each tree are the options "Remove" and "Rename". If you click on "Rename", you can choose the family's title that is deplayed when sharing/working on the family tree.

If you want to add a child to an existing family tree, it's easiest to establish the kid's parents' relationship first. Given one of the parents is called "Linda", you'll click on Linda's name on the tree, and an info box on the left side of your screen shows you all the personal data you have added for her (such as life dates).

Below these information is a button with "Add partner/ex" that allows you to add the person Linda should have a kid with; we'll assume the second parent's name is Ahmed in this example.

After you have added Ahmed (of course you can skip the first step if both parents are already a couple (or ex-couple), you click on the button "Add child" that appears below the button "Add partner/ex". If you click on "Add child", you'll see the options "Add child with Ahmed", "Add child with new partner" and "Add child without partner". In our case, you'll of course select "Add child with Ahmed" and enter the child's name, life dates and other information (i. e. "female, Layla Jones-Aciman, born 2015 in Birminghan") you want displayed.

If you want to add more than one child per couple, you can either go the same route of "Add child" -> "Add child with" or just click on the child already existing and select the option "Add brother/sister".

If you want to delete a romantic relationship, you'll first have to click on one of the partners you want to delete. An info box will appear on the left side of your screen with information like birth dates, surnames at birth etc. (if you have entered them), and below these information are a few buttons ("Add parents", "Add brother/sister" etc.). The last button is titled "More Actions", and if you click on it, it offers you first the option to set the person's parents, and then "Change partners".

After selecting "Change partners", you'll see all the (current and former) partners this person has had. If your person doesn't have any kids with the partner you want to remove, you'll get the option to "Set [Partner's name] to ex-partner", "Set [partner's name] to extra partner" and "Remove partner [Partner's name]". Now you can choose if you want the two people who shouldn't have a romantic relationship anymore to be ex-partners or delete the relationship altogether (if there had never been a romantic relationship in real life).

However, there are two restrictions to this: 1) If the two people have a child together, you can't delete the relationship, you can only mark the parents as being exes instead of current partners. 2) If one of the partners wouldn't be connected to any other member of the family tree if you deleted the relationship, you can't delete said relationship. You can, however, just delete one of the partners.

I know I am very late to the party, but maybe this is still helpful for you (or anyone else who might need an answer). You can mark the person from whose "PoV" you want to share as "Living" for a moment (though they are dead, of course), go to "Share", let the website generate a link, copy said link and set the person in question as "Deceased" again. The link will still direct to them, though they are now dead "again".

Sooo, right now I am in a rabbit hole creating a large family tree about various nobles throughout the ages and consider sharing it with a few friends. As you could guess, basically everyone on this family tree is deceased (because of course Edward the Confessor didn't live to be a thousand years old). When I try to share the family tree (clicking on the "Share" button while having selected i. e. Edward the Confessor), the following message appears:

You cannot share the family with Edward who is marked as no longer living. Please try clicking someone else on the tree.

Well, I tried, and learnt that I can only share the family tree when clicking on a person who is currently alive (which are ... approximately ten people in this tree, as I like the middle ages). Of course, I can share this way (and I can mark a dead person as alive, copy their link via "Share" button, share it with my friends and set the desired person as deceased again) but I am curious if there is any option that allows me to share directly from a deceased person's box?

I have also experienced this problem! It's super annoying. To get rid of it I just pressed the back arrow for the browser (Although it might not be on all browsers for some reason) and even then it was just a temporary fix. What worked was installing an ad blocker on my computer. It is curious to me how it only happened on my computer and not my other devices. I have determined it's just a really quite annoying ad pop-up.

You can go into the "Partners" tab and set their relationship to "Reconciled"

It will still show them as ex-partners and no other information, but you can put in specific dates of when they were together as a couple and when they became friends.

This is a very old question so you may have figured it out already, but if you go to the "Biography" section on a person, you can add a custom field at the bottom and have it display on the tile. You can just name it nationality/ethnicity/race and fill it in like normal.

Formatting mainly. Classic will duplicate a person if they have multiple spouses and won't show twins as connected to each other, etc. Partial draws a line to the second spouse without duplicating and show twins as connected, etc.

Go to one of the to people select Show relationship to [name] select the box below the the text "Choose the person to start from:" twice, from there you show be given a dropdownmenu of all members of the tree. My family tree showing only direct ancestors contains (so far) 47 individuals via 4x grandparents. Three of the ancestor lines are quite neatly arranged, but the fourth has the boxes staggered out to one side.

I would like to arrange this fourth line the same way the other three are arranged so as to be able to print them all on one page. Apart from which it looks very untidy as it is now. I could capture the graphic, then use Photoshop to move the stray elements into position, but doing it within the family tree software would be a lot easier; especially as this would have to be re-done each time I add new elements.

Is it possible to arrange this?

You can, but there are a few steps (nothing difficult though):

Select one of the siblings in question
Select "More Actions" at the bottom of their little info panel thing
Select "Change Sibling Order."
From there, you can move them to their proper placements by selecting "Move Left," which'll make them older, or "Move Right," which'll make them younger
