Is it possible to add parents of spouses of descendants?

You should be able to. What do you see when you have clicked on the spouse of a descendant and then click the "add new parent" button on the left?

I got this answer:

"Yes, it's possible, but not everyone in the tree can do this - only direct relatives of the tree's founder. Some limit needs to be introduced, to prevent the tree expanding to infinity. This could happen if more and more indirect relatives keep adding their own families."
