how do i find the maiden name of a female relative?

i am trying to track down the maiden name of louisa mcdonald. all i know is she was born in south carolina circa 1822. she married william mcdonald and then sometime after he died she married a lee carter.

A good place to start is Ancestry.com.  You can join and get the first month free.  That is usually enough time to do 90%+ of any recearch you might need to do.  You can cancel after the first month and owe nothing.
