Error message: "This choice of parents is not allowed because it would split the tree into separate pieces"

I have tried to connect a child to parents already in the tree, and received the error message in the header.  I'm not entirely sure what this error message means; is there anyway around it?  (I'm reconstructing the family trees of medieval monarchs, which are...complicated.)
