Select the "add parents" in the sidebar in order to create parents to an individual. Then, you should click on one of the parents and repeat the same process ("add parents") for grandparents. For more extended family, you can "add brother/sister" and then adding their partners, in-laws and descendants with the "add partner/ex" or "add child" buttons. I hope that this makes sense.
