add birth date as well as death date

I would like to add relevant birth date as well as the date that they died

I'm not sure what your problem is.  There are fields for birth date and death dates.  If you are asking how to display them on the tree view then select life years from the Show menu at the bottom of the screen.

The default dates are for when a person was born. To add the death date, uncheck the This person is living box when entering or editing a person's information, and a second date box shows up where you can add the death date.
