For some reason I made an error and duplicated two persons.  They are not at the end.  Do I hav to scrap the whole tree and rstart?

You can probably change the parent of their children to point to the correct (non-duplicated) parent. Once their children are safely under the correct (non-duplicated) parent, you should be able to delete the duplicate parent without any problem. But, having said that, I would make a duplicate of your tree first.
