I had more than one person on the tree with the same name and set the wrong one as a 'partner' and now my whole tree is a mess! It won't let me delete it because it would 'split the tree' and after about an hour and a half I'm stuck with the 'split the tree' note no matter what I try!

Your goal here is to not split the tree. So you will have to give the people the correct partners before you remove the current partners. Once they are partnered with someone else in the tree, you can delete the current, incorrect partner.
