Is there a way of marking "dead" people?

Yes. When your on a person click edit underneath the birth date there is small box checked this person is living next to it. If the person is passed just uncheck the box then there will be boxes for you to enter the person Death Date if you know it.

Doing so also changes the person's box from deep black text to grayed out text, so it's obvious when viewing the tree. Very helpful!
