At the bottom, the first pulldown menu is Show:
Click it and select Life Years to show only birth/death year (e.g. 1821-1894), or select Life Dates to show full dates for birth & death (e.g. Born 19 Aug 1821  Died 12 Oct 1894).
Note that Life Years uses one line while Life Dates uses two lines.
