Even if i hover over the female's married name, it still does not show her maiden name that i put in.  So what is the purpose??

In the options dialog you can change the "Surename" option to "At birth" from "Now" to display the maiden name names.

The options link is next to the print icon.

@DanUgrin It was this way before, but seems to have disappeared with the 2021 update :-(
The option is still there it has just been moved to the new options dialog.  Please re-read my previous answer.  You need to click on the "Show options" link next to the "Print tree" icon.  The options dialog will pop up and you will then be able to select the appropriate "Surname" option.  You can then click on "Hide options" to close the options dialog.
